Even the most dedicated brusher and flosser cannot remove all plaque and tartar from their teeth at home. Over time, plaque hardens into calculus (tartar) that can only be removed with professional instruments — and if left untreated, this leads to gum disease, bleeding, bad breath, and ultimately tooth loss.

Our dental hygienists use a combination of ultrasonic scaling, hand scaling, and air polishing to remove all built-up deposits, staining, and bacteria from around your teeth and below the gumline. The result is teeth that feel smooth and clean in a way that no amount of home brushing can replicate.

We recommend hygiene appointments every 3–6 months depending on your gum health. Regular visits don’t just keep your mouth healthier — they also allow us to catch early signs of gum disease, oral cancer, and tooth decay before they become serious and expensive to treat.

Why Choose Hygiene Appointments?

  • Removes hardened tartar that brushing at home cannot touch
  • Prevents and treats gum disease — the leading cause of adult tooth loss
  • Noticeably fresher breath and cleaner-feeling teeth
  • Removes surface staining for a naturally brighter smile
  • Early detection of gum disease, decay, and oral cancer signs
  • Personalised home care advice to maintain results between visits

How It Works

  1. Gum & Oral Health Assessment

We measure your gum pocket depths and check for bleeding or recession to assess your gum health. If you're a new patient, we take full records for comparison at future visits.

  2. Ultrasonic Scaling

A gentle ultrasonic scaler uses vibration and water to dislodge and flush away the bulk of tartar deposits from your tooth surfaces and between teeth.

  3. Hand Scaling (Sub-Gingival)

Fine hand instruments are used to carefully clean below the gumline, where bacteria cause the most damage. For patients with gum disease, this is the most important stage.

  4. Air Polishing & Stain Removal

A controlled jet of water, air, and fine powder removes surface staining from coffee, tea, wine, and tobacco. Your teeth are left visibly cleaner and slightly whiter.

  5. Personalised Home Care Advice

We review your brushing technique, recommend the best interdental cleaning tools for your mouth, and advise how often to return based on your individual gum health risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I have a hygiene appointment?

For patients with healthy gums, every 6 months is sufficient. If you have a history of gum disease or are at higher risk, we may recommend every 3–4 months. We'll advise the ideal frequency after your first assessment.

Does a scale and polish hurt?

Most patients find hygiene appointments comfortable. If you have sensitive gums or significant tartar build-up, you may feel some sensitivity during the treatment. We can apply a topical numbing gel if needed, and always work at a pace you're comfortable with.

What's the difference between a hygiene appointment and a check-up?

A check-up is conducted by a dentist and involves examining your teeth, gums, bite, and soft tissues for disease or abnormalities. A hygiene appointment is carried out by a hygienist and focuses on cleaning your teeth and treating your gums. They are complementary — ideally done at the same visit or on separate appointments.

What is air polishing?

Air polishing uses a controlled stream of pressurised water, air, and a fine powder (usually erythritol or bicarbonate) to blast away soft deposits and surface stains. It's particularly effective on tea, coffee, and tobacco staining and is gentler on enamel than traditional rubber-cup polishing.
